Paying College Athletes

Dennis Patchin, Rick Lukens and Vince Grippi talked to EWU Athletic Director Bill Chaves about the Eagles Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, the possibility of the Big Sky Tournament finding a scheduled home, and paying college athletes. Bill is on the council trying to figure out the details of how this will play out.

The Eastern Eagles secured at least a share of the Big Sky title, their third in row, with a 56-34 win at Portland St. Jabari Wilson had a career day rushing the ball, gaining 132 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Vernon Adams, Jr. passed for 309 yards and two scores. Cooper Kupp had 147 receiving yards and one touchdown. Shaq Hill returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD. Tevin McDonald had a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and a 73 yard pick-6.

The Eastern Washington Eagles had little trouble defeating the Walla Walla University Wolves, 82-44. Martin Seiferth had 24 points and 18 rebounds. The Eagle bench got a huge kick out of walk-on Nate Galgalo’s 3 pointer at the end of the game.

The Eastern Washington Eagles started their game against the Toledo Rockets on an offensive roll. QB Vernon Adams was 10-11 with 2 touchdown passes on the Eagles first two possessions, and Eastern led 14-6. From that point on, EWU was only able to muster one more touchdown and little else. The Rockets controlled the contest with their rushing game, and Toledo came out on top, 33-21. The Eagles fall to 2-1 on the season going into their bye week next week.

Paul Sorensen talked to Coach Beau Baldwin, OL Steven Forgette and LB Ronnie Hamlin after the game.

The Eastern Eagles improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2007 with a convincing 43-17 win over the Western Oregon Wolves. Vernon Adams had 4 touchdown passes in the first quarter and the game was never in question. Adams finished the day with 5 TD throws and backup QB Anthony Vitto got his first career TD pass.

Keith Osso talked to Eastern Washington Head football coach, Beau Baldwin, after the Eagles historic win at Oregon State and before their home opener vs. Western Oregon.

The Eastern Eagles became only the third FCS team to defeat a ranked FBS team since 2000 with their exciting 49-46 victory over the Oregon State Beavers. EWU scored on their first 6 possessions of the first half and lead 26-17 at the intermission. The two teams traded ownership of the lead in the 2nd half. QB Vernon Adams scored a TD with less than 20 seconds to play in the game and Eastern lead 49-46. Oregon State attempted a FG that just missed as time expired and Eastern Washington gained their first ever victory over a Pac-12 conference school. Adams finished the game with 411 yards and 4 TDs passing along with 107 yards and 2 more TDs rushing. Check out our radio highlights with Larry Weir and Paul Sorensen.
